Digging Deep and Spreading Out Wide: The Art of Writing Poetry
May 15 - May 17
In my upcoming weekend class at Santa Fe Workshops, co-taught with Arthur Sze, we’ll explore what it means to go deep and spread wide as complementary approaches to the art of making poetry. To go deep can be to mine language, to delve and excavate, to take an image, thought, experience or emotion as far as you can, to discover what imaginative treasure lies buried in the substrata. To spread wide can be to write associatively, to discover unforeseen connections and metaphors; it can also involve writing disjunctively, making leaps through the power of the unfettered imagination. Both are methods of discovery to revel in.
